The People's National Party
Prime Minister and PNP President Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, M.P.
The governing People’s National Party is Jamaica’s first political party and the oldest in the English-speaking Caribbean. Founded in 1938 by The Hon Norman Washington Manley, the party is today led by Prime Minister The Most Honorable Portia Simpson Miller, M.P.
Since inception, the PNP has played a central role in Jamaica’s growth and development as an independent nation. The PNP led the struggles to attain Universal Adult Suffrage in 1944, to gain political independence from Britain in 1962, and in the 50 years since, to making Jamaica a democratic, fair and just society
The PNP has formed the government for three periods in Jamaica’s history: from 1955-1962, 1972-1980, 1989-2007. The party's most recent victory in the General Elections of December 29, 2011 marks its most recent term as government. PNP Prime Ministers since independence have included The Right Honourable Michael Manley and The Most Honourable P.J. Patterson, and The Most Honourable Portia Simpson Miller.
Central to the PNP philosophy is a commitment to economic, social and cultural progress of Jamaica by ensuring equality of opportunity for all, and the PNP has put this mission into action every time it has formed the Government.
An important organisational foundation of the Party is the coming together of all social and economic classes to form a class alliance including small farmers; rural poor; urban poor; working class; professionals - teachers, lawyers, doctors; small business owners etc.
Providing and encouraging jobs, business opportunity, improved standard of living, education, housing, healthcare, peace of mind, security, people participation and cultural expression have always been hallmarks of Governments led by the PNP.
